China To Open Skies For GA By 2010?

Authorities Could Ease Low-Level Restrictions By 2010

China, where general aviation has been virtually unheard of since the Communist take-over in 1949, may be on the verge of opening its skies. Chinese media report the Beijing government may be poised to lift low-level flight restrictions by 2010.

China Daily quotes Zhang Hongbiao, head of helicopter manufacturing company China Aviation Corporation II (AVIC II), who says the potential GA market in his country could be huge. He says recent improvements in Chinese domestic radar coverage have added fuel to the movement for general aviation -- especially among China's newfound billionaires who can afford to fly wherever they want to go.

Zhang envisions a China with skies much like those in the US -- where helicopters fly air taxi missions, medical support and television news sorties. Already, he says, foreign manufacturers are lining up to get in on what they see as a booming GA market.
