Updated FAA Helicopter Flying Handbook Includes Vuichard Safety Maneuver

Vortex Ring Recovery Technique Officially Acknowledged By The Agency

The FAA released an update of the Helicopter Flying Handbook including the Vuichard Safety Technique of the Vortex Ring State Recovery for the first time in October.

Swiss helicopter pioneer Captain Claude Vuichard is known for multiple safety techniques in helicopter operations. The most famous maneuver is the Vortex Ring State Recovery Technique. The procedure was filmed the first time by Claude Vuichard, and the video has been viewed million times on Facebook, Youtube and other online platforms.

Currently, Capt. Vuichard is travelling around the world, on his mission for zero vortex accidents and to spread the message for more safety in the Helicopter Industry globally. For his commitment for more safety in the industry, he was honored in 2018 with the Safety Award issued by the Helicopter Association International (HAI).

After more than 30 safety seminars, courses and over 200 flight training hours in 2 years with more than 1,500  participants, it is clear that the message is getting heard in the Community of Helicopter Pilots, Operators and Flight Schools.

With the latest release of the Helicopter Flying Handbook provided by the FAA, the Vuichard Technique to escape the vortex ring state (also known as settling with power) is officially acknowledged as a recovery procedure. The flying handbook represents the basic principles for all helicopter pilot training in the US and globally.
