Alvin Brown Appointed NTSB Vice Chairman

Former Jacksonville Mayor Was USDOT Infrastructure Adviser

Alvin Brown, the former mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, who has been a member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) since March 2024, was appointed Vice Chairman of the safety agency by President Biden on December 20, 2024.

Brown was the mayor of Jacksonville from 2011 to 2015. He was a senior member of the White House leadership team under President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore.

Brown said, "I am honored to be named in this new role of vice chair of the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB is the gold standard for public safety, and I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues at this federal agency to save lives and make transportation safer.”

Under Vice President Gore, Brown was the Senior Adviser for Urban Policy, and as Vice Chair of the White House Community Empowerment Board he advised President Clinton and Vice President Gore on a broad range of domestic issues including job creation, new business development, community revitalization and affordable housing.

As Executive Director of the White House Community Empowerment Board, Brown led the Administration’s $4 billion initiatives including the Empowerment Zone/Enterprise Community programs. He also served as Senior Adviser to the late Commerce Secretary Ron Brown.

Brown earned his B.S. and Master’s degrees in business administration from Jacksonville University as well as a Master’s degree from the Duke University Divinity School.

He also completed postgraduate work at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Brown has received honorary doctoral degrees from Edward Waters College and Jacksonville University.
