Airborne 01.26.15: Pirker Settles w/FAA, Harrelson's Polar Journey, FAA Sued

Also: Airborne Unlimited Under The Weather (In More Ways Than One), House GA Caucus, New CubCrafters Boss, NAB Featuring UAVs, House Checks FAA Cert Processes, FAA Goes Off On Sleep Apnea... Again

A quick caveat... Ashley is REALLY under the weather and the entire ANN crew is traveling this week/scattered all over the known universe... which required some highly imaginative substitute tomfoolery to take Ashley's place for a day or two. S

o Jim Campbell steps in, where he's stuck in the middle of a snowstorm in the boonies of Indiana, in a hotel room with really lousy net access. But, as always, we persevered (ANN's specialty--no matter how great the odds). The results are acceptable, but let's just say that Ashley will NEVER have to worry about Jim competing for her job. With luck, we can get her back to work in a day or two and quit subjecting you to that ugly Jim guy...

When Raphael Pirker used his UAV to take pictures for the University of Virginia in 2011, the FAA said it was a commercial use of the UAV and in violation of FAA rules. Pirker had maintained that the rules were beyond the FAA's authority because it has not yet completed the formal rulemaking process. Facing a possibly lengthy court battle and a $10,000 fine, Pirker has decided to settle his case with the FAA by accepting a $1,100 fine, but admits no wrongdoing for flying a UAV near the University.

Pilot Bill Harrelson has completed his attempt to circumnavigate the globe over both poles, landing back at Kinston Regional Jetport at Stallings Field in Kinston, North Carolina last Wednesday. Harrelson flew his Lancair IV, N6ZQ, more than 22,000 nautical miles, facing and conquering some of our planet's least hospitable terrain and weather. A resident of Palm Coast, Florida has sued the FAA for the loss of her home as well as medical expenses stemming from an accident which occurred on January 3, 2013. The home of Susan Crockett was substantially damaged and eventually had to be razed after it was impacted by an airplane attempting an emergency landing at Florida's Flagler County Airport. All this... and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
