Afghan Refugee Gives Birth While Evacuating Kabul

The Birth Took Place On A US Military Aircraft, Which The Baby Was Named For

Reach is the name of a newly born Afghan girl, who was brought to safety while still inside her mother’s body and possibly one of the most dramatic delivery tales, to boot.

She was named after the call sign on the Air Force C-17 that brought them to Germany on August 21, 2021 after evacuating Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense had been in contact with the family since they left, thus they were able to confirm the name selection, Gen. Tod Wolters, commander of U.S. European Command said.

“So that child’s name will forever be Reach,” Wolters said. “And if you can well imagine, being an Air Force fighter pilot, it’s my dream to watch that young child called Reach grow up and be a U.S. citizen and fly United States Air Force fighters in our Air Force.”

The family will remain unnamed for safety concerns. The aircraft Reach 828 departed from a staging area in Qatar on Saturday when the mother began having complications due to low blood pressure and going into labor.

“The aircraft commander decided to descend in altitude to increase air pressure in the aircraft, which helped stabilize and save the mother’s life,” Air Mobility Command said via Twitter. Teams on the ground at the military’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Center were alerted of the aircraft coming in ten minutes before their arrival, according to nurse Capt. Erin Brymer.

Medical support personnel from the 86th Medical Group met the Afghan mother at the Reach 828, and moments after she delivered the child in the aircraft upon landing.
