Analyst Thinks Blue Angels, Thunderbirds Could Fall Victim To Budget Cuts

Elite Units "More About Morale Than Traditional Combat"

An analyst with the Brookings Institution said the fervor for budget cuts could put demonstration teams like the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds at risk.

The teams' budgets are comparatively small ... about $30 million for the Blue Angels out of a $530 Billion total defense budget. But with the defense department facing $350 billion in budget cuts over the next 10 years, Brookings analyst Michael O'Hanlon said the teams could be in jeopardy.

O'Hanlon told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that teams like the Blue Angels are "more about morale than traditional combat." He said that the cuts will be painful, and that many things that people think are of value will be axed.

But John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org ... a military news and information website ... disagrees. Pike said that the Blue Angles would be disbanded "only after they sell the Washington Monument."

The Blue Angels have scheduled 35 shows nationwide this year.
