Scholarship Stokes Passion For Aviation

Early Experiences In Aviation Family Grew Love Of Flight

Tommy Hammonds grew up in the back seat of his dad’s Piper Cub and caught the aviation bug at an early age. His grandfather was also a pilot so Tommy got his private ticket at 19 and then decided to pursue a career as an airplane mechanic.

With skilled A&Ps in demand, he didn’t have any trouble finding work after completing his training at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. Many of his friends in school went to the airlines but Tommy went in the direction his love of historic aircraft and general aviation took him. Only just 24 years old, he has made significant contributions to the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing.

The mission of CAF is to preserve and showcase World War II aircraft, and Tommy found a home for his technical skills and passion for history. He earned his certification as a flight engineer on the B-25 Miss Mitchell, owned by the CAF. His responsibilities include preparation of the aircraft for flight and being an important observer during missions to ensure safety and operational readiness of the aircraft. Tommy also serves as Crew Chief in the restoration of a L-5 Stinson.

His dedication to aviation was recognized when he recently was awarded a scholarship by the Benson Airport’s EAA Chapter 745. It is given to young aviators with a staunch commitment to the future of aviation and his volunteer work with CAF made him an outstanding recipient. He embodies the spirit of dedication, passion, and respect for history, and he encourages others to consider a career in aviation especially as a maintenance technician.
