Airplane Collides With Car During Emergency Landing

Was Attempting Off-Airport Landing After Engine Failure

A pilot that had just departed from the Hawley, MN airport Tuesday was forced to make an off-airport landing when the engine on the 1979 Mooney M20K stopped shortly after takeoff.

The Duluth News Tribune reports that, according to the Minnesota Highway Patrol, the pilot, who was not identified, had departed Hawley en route to Minot, ND just before noon when the incident occurred. The pilot said the engine failed at about 1,000 feet. There was one passenger on board the airplane as well.

The Patrol said that the pilot made a successful emergency landing on Highway 10, but quickly overtook a Ford Fusion automobile as they rolled out on the highway. The driver of the car tried to swerve into the ditch before the plane caught up to her, but the prop of the Mooney struck the rear of the Ford.

There were no injuries reported among any of those involved, according to the MHP.
