While at EAA AirVenture 2012, ANN News Editor, Tom Patton, had the chance to investigate a unique looking aircraft intended to enter the LSA market. Patton met with Steve Schultz, the president of Ion Aircraft to discuss his aircraft and how it would fit in the LSA picture.
Schultz started off by explaining that the whole design of the Ion aircraft was developed around providing the pilot and passenger with extraordinary visibility. When this became the primary objective, the design had to be unique, and in this video you’ll see that’s exactly the case.
Schultz explains that despite the unique appearance of the design, there is nothing extraordinary in the operation of the aircraft. He said that the main weight is located at the center of gravity and only the weight of the pilot really makes any difference.
As the video progresses you’ll learn more about how Ion Aircraft achieves the visibility for the rear passenger, the aerodynamics, and the handling characteristics of the aircraft. If you are at all interested in unique designs and innovation for a purpose, this video is informative and fun to watch.
