NBAA’s Brown: Further Enhancing Biz-Av Safety Remains A Priority

Remarks Come At Phenom Jet Association’s Annual Phenomenal Conference

NBAA Chief Operating Officer Steve Brown told the more than 200 attendees at the recent Phenom Jet Association’s annual Phenomenal conference that even though business aviation is enjoying the safest era in its history, a constant focus must remain on continuously enhancing that record.

“This is particularly important in an environment where the level and pace of international flying is increasing, resulting in operational conditions that are sometimes the most challenging in the world,” said Brown.

During the conference, which was held earlier this month in Coeur d’Alene, ID, Brown cited five key regulatory and operational issues relevant to Phenom operators. Those are:

  • Mitigating fatigue in long-range operations, which is especially important in single-pilot missions.
  • Gross navigation errors, which are proportionally more common in general aviation operations than in commercial airline operations.
  • The challenges of NextGen implementation, including the threat of direct user fees for air traffic control services. Brown also discussed the status of ADS-B equipage.
  • Global environmental concerns, including the debate over aircraft emissions and the International Civil Aviation Organization’s anticipated actions, which would end the threat of the European Union Emissions Trading System.
  • The influence of the federal budget on FAA reauthorization legislation, including the arguments that general aviation should pay its “fair share” of aviation system costs.

During the question and answer session, Brown also discussed how the business aviation community can join together most effectively to advocate for aviation and to interact with elected officials at all levels of government.

The Phenom Jet Association was founded in 2010 to encourage safe and efficient operation of Embraer Phenom aircraft, and fellowship among owners, pilots, operators and service providers of these aircraft.
