Documented To Be The Oldest Of The Original Unit

The oldest documented member of the Tuskegee Airmen has Gone West.

Walter Crenshaw Jr. passed away Monday at the Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles, CA at the age of 106, according to the LA Sentinel.

Crenshaw was an Administrative Assistant to the Provost Marshall at Tuskegee Army Air Field. In that role, he conducted background checks and oversaw the induction of the initial recruits to the unit, and knew each of them on an individual basis, according to the report.

Crenshaw was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He was trained as an administrator at Ft. Logan in Denver, CO before being assigned to the Tuskegee Airmen. After his military service, he lived in Detroit, where he was the head shipping clerk for Railway Express Agency. He relocated to Santa Monica, CA in 1977, where he was active in the community.
