Sitka, AK Seaplane Dock Slated For Refurbishment

Facility Had Been Condemned Over The Winter

The city assembly of Sitka, AK has voted to fund repairs to the city's seaplane dock, which had been condemned over the winter.

The dock had been deemed unusable after one of the pilings crumbled. Radio station KCAW reports that when that happened, the main float for the 54-year-old dock drifted away from the structure and stressed a power cord. At the time, Harbor Master Stan Eliason said that the endpiece of the dock was unrepairable.

A new seaplane dock has been proposed for the north end of Japonski Island. But until it can be built, Kevin Knox, chair of the Port and Harbors Commission, said pilots need a place to park their seaplanes. He said that the city needs to get another five years out of the dock while the new facility is built.

The repairs are estimated to cost about $170,000, and will be completed by a local contractor, according to the report.
