Flight Evacuated In Burbank After 'Noncredible' Bomb Remarks

Plane Turned Around Shortly After Takeoff

Comments overheard by flight attendants about a bomb aboard a Southwest Airlines flight that had just left Burbank Friday afternoon led the flight crew to turn the plane around shortly after takeoff. After landing, approximately 130 passengers were evacuated from the jet in an isolated area of the airport.

One passenger, a man in his mid-20s, was removed from the plane in handcuffs, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, and four others were detained by authorities as passengers left the aircraft through the rear. A bomb-sniffing dog was sent to inspect the aircraft, and passengers and bags were rescreened by security.

There was no bomb.

"We believe this is most likely a non-credible type situation," TSA spokeswoman Jennifer Peppin said. "However, the pilot went ahead and chose to cease his departure and went ahead and placed the plane in a remote area."

Southwest Flight 2074, which was originally scheduled to depart for Las Vegas at 3 pm, was still on the ground three hours after the incident.

"We saw cop cars pulling up next to us and looking at the plane," said passenger Jenny Richman. "Then the officers came on (board) with loaded weapons and escorted several people off."
