Finally, Downed Aircraft Recovered From Beneath Tennessee Lake

Bodies Recovered Two Months After Crash

For two months, the remains of 62-year old Earl Witte and his passenger, 70-year old Clem Anderson, both from Paducah (KY), have rested in a watery grave near Dover (TN). Their Citabria (file photo, right) crashed into Lake Kentucky June 14, but the bodies and the wreckage weren't recovered until Friday.

Earl and Clem are going home.

"My mind never did let me say they're gone," Anderson's widow, Virginia, told the Paducah Sun. "I just kept thinking they might still be alive. But it's a relief to get their bodies out of the water. With time it will get better; life will be a little easier."

A nonprofit search crew -- the National Underwater Marine Agency, based in Charleston (SC) -- found the wreckage Friday using a side-scan radar and magnetometer, a device that detects magnetic waves emitted from metal objects.
