TSA Orders 300 'Stick Figure' Scanners

Agency Says Older Scanners Will Be Converted Through Software Upgrades

TSA Administrator John Pistole has announced the expenditure of about $44.8 million for the purchase of 300 millimeter wave Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) machines for deployment to airports nationwide. TSA says the machines will further strengthen security at US airports. The new machines have automated target recognition software. These so-called "stick figure" scanners are designed to eliminate revealing, passenger-specific images.

TSA says it will take months to get the machines deployed, and says it will make airport announcements once a schedule is finalized.

TSA says it began installing the new software on millimeter wave imaging technology machines currently in airports to enhance existing privacy protections. The additional units will be deployed with the new software installed, and all millimeter wave units currently in use are in the process of being upgraded. There are now nearly 500 AIT units at 78 airports nationwide.

AIT is designed to enhance security by safely screening passengers for metallic and non-metallic threats—including weapons, explosives and other objects concealed under layers of clothing.

TSA emphasizes imaging technology screening is safe for all travelers, and says the technology meets all known national and international health and safety standards.

The most recent purchase is part of an existing contract with L-3 Communications and includes the option to purchase an additional 200 units.
