Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Gets New Runway Safety System

Engineered Materials Arresting System Should Be Completed This Month

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will soon be a much more friendly place to land aircraft in trouble.

The airport is installing an Engineered Materials Arresting System -- the first of its kind in Florida. The EMA system stops aircraft that overshoot the runway with a series of concrete blocks.

"The key to this bid and why it is so good is that it allows the aircraft to come to a halt, without breaking the landing gear," said airport spokesman Trevor Fisher. "Hence, the landing gears are not broken, the aircraft is not damaged and it minimizes the possibilities of the passengers on the plane getting damaged."

The $7 million system should be completed by the end of this month.
