All Safe After Regional Jet Goes Off End Of CLE Runway

Heavy Snow, Winds Reported

No one was injured, but an Embraer 170 is a bit worse for wear after it skidded off the runway while landing at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) on Sunday.

CNN reports state Shuttle America Flight 6448, operating as a Delta Connection flight from Atlanta with 70 passengers and four crewmembers onboard, slid off the departure end of runway 28 at 3:14 pm EDT.

"For reasons unknown, the plane did skid off the end of the runway, taking out a localizer antenna array used for that runway, going through a fence line," said airport spokeswoman Pat Smith. "The nose of the aircraft is resting just barely on a roadway that is on our perimeter fence line."

Heavy snowfall and winds of just over 20 mph were reported at the time of the accident. Shuttle America spokesman Warren Wilkinson said the condition of the 6,017-foot runway was reported as "fair."

The aircraft slid approximately 100 feet past the end of the runway, Wilkinson added.

Flights in and out of CLE were halted for over an hour after the accident. Busses took passengers from the disabled plane to the terminal.
