Radar Warning Receivers Safeguard Tactical Aircraft

BAE Systems’ Advanced Warning Receivers Increase Survivability on F-16 and C-130J

Tactical radar warning receivers produced by BAE Systems have been used on F-15 Fighting Falcon and C-130J Hercules since the 1990s. Its AN/ALR-56M detection systems are now being installed on the C-130J Super Hercules under a $133 million contract with the Defense Logistics Agency.

The AN/ALR-56M has adaptive filtering that can isolate threat signals in dense signal environments with long-range, broad-spectrum detection capability. The system gives pilots timely warning about current search, acquisition, and tracking radars as well as reliable response capabilities so pilots can make rapid decisions to engage or evade the threat.

Agile architecture, antennas, and controls integrate seamlessly with onboard avionics, radars, jammers, and countermeasure controls. Its high-speed processing and advanced algorithms are designed to address modern threats.

The F-16’s installed Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar will seamlessly integrate with the AN/AALR-56M system. Successful verification and validation tests were completed with no loss of capability on the F-16 in 2021 and the aircraft achieved Initial Operation Capability.

Lindsay Gallagher, Tactical Aircraft Electronic Warfare Systems director at BAE Systems said, “The AN/ALR-56M has shown what it can bring to the fight, and it is keeping these critical aircraft relevant against evolving threats in contested battlespaces. 56M is a critical part of the fleet’s electromagnetic warfare capabilities. As a global leader in defense electronics, we are working hard to keep the F-16 and C-130J survivable and relevant for decades to come.”
