Body Found in Jet Lavatory Spurs Lawsuit

Carrier Accused of Negligence

A recently filed federal lawsuit contends an airline passenger died in the restroom during a commercial airline flight, but wasn't discovered for more than two hours after the aircraft landed at Chicago O'Hare Airport.

Taisuke Matsuo, 66, apparently suffered a heart attack on an April 13, 2005 American Airlines flight from Tokyo to Chicago on a trip home to Indianapolis, according to the lawsuit filed by his wife, Carolyn D. Watts.

After landing, passengers and flight crew disembarked, and the aircraft was taken to another gate for cleaning. Crews then discovered the bathroom was locked from the inside and discovered Matsuo's body -- about two hours later.

American Airlines stands accused of negligence and damages of about $150,000 are being sought. The airline does not comment on pending litigation according to Tim Smith, a spokesman for American in Fort Worth, TX.
