Repairs At Wallops Expected To Take A Year

Virginia Commercial Spaceflight Authority Says Pad Was Spared Major Damage

The Virginia Commercial Spaceflight Authority says that repairs to the a launch pad on Wallops Island damaged when an Orbital Antares rocket exploded on launch will take up to a year.

The assessment comes after the authority received a detailed engineering report following inspection of the damage. The failure of the booster and the subsequent explosion left a crater north of the launch pad, but water samples indicate that there was no environmental damage to back bays or tributaries, according to a report from the Associated Press.

The timeline and cost for repairs are still being finalized, but it is estimated that the budget for bringing the pad back to operational status will not exceed $20 million.
