Fiery Landing Claims Two in Venture

Pilot Robert Gisburne, 44, a part-time Carefree (AZ) resident, and his father-in-law passenger, Charles Tegeler, 74, of Scottsdale, were killed as Gisburne's Questair Venture made what some witnesses called a really 'hot' landing at Carefree's upscale Sky Ranch Airport on Tuesday. Speculation is running high in the local area that an engine failure may have precipitated an attempt to 'absolutely, positively' make the runway, with the result that the slick little plane was just going too fast. The unfortunate occupants were dead at the scene.

The plane eventually came to rest at a stop sign at the edge of the airport; a postcrash fire reduced the wreckage to "no more than the size of a washing machine," according to one report.
