Fatalities In Cuban Airliner Accident Climb To 111

Mexico Has Suspended The Company That Leased The 737 To Cubana Airline

One of the survivors of the Cuban airliner accident last week has succumbed to her injuries, bringing the number of fatalities to 111 in the accident.

The most recent fatality is 23-year-old Cuban student Grettel Landrove. Cuba's state-run media reported that she died in a Havana hospital due to "severe traumatic lesions". Two other Cuban women remain hospitalized in critical condition, according to a report from Reuters.

The Boeing 737 that went down had been leased to Cubana the a Mexican leasing company Damojh. It was manufactured in 1979. Mexico's civil aviation authority has temporarily suspended Damojh's operations while it investigates the company's practices and procedures, according to the report.

The 737 was one of three owned by the leasing company. It is not the first time the company's operations have been suspended for compliance reviews, according to Mexican officials. In one, a Damojh aircraft made an emergency landing on a beach in Mexico in 2010 due to a landing gear issue. The second came in 2013, when a person identified as a former Damojh pilot claimed there were maintenance issues with the company's aircraft.
