Red Cat Integrates AI into Army's Recon Drone Program

Teal 2 Drone Will Host Autonomous Target ID, Tracking

Red Cat Holdings has announced efforts to integrate "advanced AI capabilities" into the US Army's Short Range Reconnaissance Program.

The UAV specialist is looking to incorporate Teledyne FLIR's Prism AI platform, allowing the future recon UAVs to autonomously classify, detect, and track objects and targets while underway, day or night. Red Cat subsidiary Teal Drones is heading up the integration after being selected by the US Department of Defense's Defense Innovation Unit, and the Army, as one of 2 finalists in the Short Range Recon program. Teal believes that going above and beyond 'customary ISR capabilities' and giving the Army 'tactical edge' in battlefield management and decision-making in its ultimate deliverable. The package will be included in the firm's Teal 2 drone.

“Teal’s solution is the first to integrate this kind of advanced artificial intelligence and real-time processing onboard the aircraft itself. This allows us to bring as much capability to the tactical edge as possible while lowering the cognitive load of warfighters,” said George Matus, Red Cat’s Chief Technology Officer. “Our collaboration with Teledyne FLIR continues to strengthen our product ecosystem and help unlock the powerful future we see with drones.”
