Armed Aircraft Again Patrolling Over Iraq

Called A 'Cautionary Move' By Embassy And Pentagon Officials

The U.S. military is flying 30-35 missions per day over Iraq, according to Pentagon sources. Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon's press secretary, said that the missions are mostly surveillance sorties, but "some of those aircraft are armed."

The flights include both manned and unmanned aircraft.

USA Today reports that Kirby said that the armed aircraft are intended to help protect the 300 "military advisers" that President Obama has sent to Iraq in response to recent developments there.

The flights are part of an overall "force protection" effort to provide security for U.S. advisers that will be working outside the embassy compound, Kirby said.
