Thai Airways Splits Replacement Airliner Order

Some From Boeing, Some From Airbus, As Fleet Ages

Thai Airways has unveiled a plan to replace several of its older airliners, and will split the order between Boeing and Airbus.

The airline says it has ordered seven A300-300 medium-range aircraft, along with eight B777's to cover the long-haul routes. The airline said it would take delivery of the aircraft on lease by 2014.

While no financial details were disclosed, the international news service AFP reports that the airline said in February that it would spend more than $1 billion on 15 new aircraft.

Like most airlines, Thai Airways has had a difficult time during the global recession, and sometimes-deadly political protests have driven down the tourist business in Thailand. Because of the economic conditions, the airline has delayed taking delivery of six Airbus A380 aircraft until 2012-2013.
