Falkland Islands Places Order for Four BN2B-26 Islanders

Continues Fleet Modernization on 75th Anniversary of Operations

The Falkland Islands Government signed a Letter of Intent to purchase four Britten-Norman BN2B-26 Islanders on November 7. The $9.75 million deal marks the 75th anniversary of operations for the Falkland Islands Government Aviation Service (FIGAS).

The order is part of FIGAS’s effort to modernize and expand its fleet. The organization contracted Britten-Normal to build two Islanders in 2019, one of which has since been delivered.

“We are so pleased to have such an incredible opportunity to build a new chapter in our long-standing relationship with the Falkland Islands Government and to continue to support the communities of these important islands,” stated William Hynett, CEO of Britten-Norman.

FIGAS currently operates five aircraft, all being BN-2 Islanders, including four for passenger transport and one for maritime patrol. The fleet plays a crucial role in keeping the remote Falkland communities connected as well as providing air ambulance, postal carrier, freight, veterinary, environmental observation, and scenic flight services.

Britten-Norman has delivered nearly 1,300 Islanders to customers in over 100 countries so far. Since its introduction in 1965, the aircraft has accumulated around 20 million flight hours.

Maintaining a fleet of entirely BN2B-26s was a strategic choice by FIGAS. The twin-engine turboprop aircraft is known for its STOL performance, being able to get off the ground in around 600 ft and land in 459 ft. This is an essential capability for Falkland’s jagged terrain. It also has a practical interior with four bench seats and room for a pilot and copilot.

“Our relationship with FIGAS is an exemplar of the benefits that can be achieved in private / public sector co-operation,” Hynett continued. “As one of our most valued long-term partners, we rely on crucial feedback from FIGAS and work hard to use this knowledge to further refine our products and services.”
