Super Bowl Halftime Show Featured Hundreds Of Drones

Performance Was Recorded Prior To The Game Due To TFR

By the time Tom Brady had wrapped a spectacular comeback victory in the first overtime game in Super Bowl history ... Lady Gaga's halftime show had been largely forgotten by all but the most ardent Gaga fans ... and a lot of people interested in drones.

That's because the spectacular light display that appeared behind Lady Gaga as she opened her show from the roof of NRG Stadium was created by hundreds of small drones.

But The Verge reports that Intel, which built the drones, confirmed that the display had to be created a few days before the big game and electronically inserted into the video seen on television and by the fans in the stadium because of the TFR in place over the stadium during the game, and altitude restrictions placed on commercial drones.

Still, it was pretty spectacular. Intel provided 300 of its Shooting Star drones for the display. Each aircraft weighs 28 grams, or about an ounce, and the swarms can be controlled by a single operator. They are also being used by Disney to create displays at their theme parks.

The drones formed an American flag during Gaga's opening, and later were used to make logos for Pepsi, which sponsored the halftime show, and Intel ... for obvious reasons.

Intel did not mention that the performance was created in advance in it official news release. Sill, it was a pretty impressive display, and one that we'll likely be seeing more of in the future.
