EASA Begins Certification Process For C919 Airliner

No Decision Has been Made On Eventual Certification, Ky Says

With the first flight of the COMAC C919 airliner set for early May, EASA has begun to look into possible certification of the jet.

Reuters reports that EASA Executive Director Patrick Ky said at an event in Shanghai that no decision has yet been made about eventual certification of the C919, designed to compete with Airbus and Boeing single-aisle jetliners. The discussions about certification are being conducted within the context of the Bilateral Air Safety Agreements (BASA) between the two countries.

Representatives of EASA and the CAAC are scheduled to meet Thursday in Shanghai, according to the report. It will be the first to be held since the signing of an agreement in 2015 to more closely cooperate on aviation issues.

On Wednesday, the Shanghai Airport Authority said that the first flight of the C919 is planned for early may, which was the first official confirmation of the event.
