It Doesn't Technically Fly, But It Might As Well

Supersonic Car Model At Farnborough Is Designed To Get Young People Excited About STEM Subjects

Everyone knows that airplanes aren't the only things that show up at air shows, and The Farnborough International Airshow this year is no exception. On display is a mockup marking the first appearance of the partnership between Promethean and the Bloodhound SSC (Supersonic Car) Project.

Bloodhound Supersonic Car Model

Yes, a supersonic car. The Bloodhound SSC Project plans to design and build the first supersonic car capable of achieving 1,000mph and break the current World Land Speed Record, and it has partnered with Promethean to inspire young people to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) education and careers.

School parties are being invited to see the first life size model of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car on Friday, the show's Futures Day, dedicated to promoting career opportunities in aerospace and defence industries. At the same time, Promethean will be showcasing its range of interactive STEM resources, developed to support Bloodhound's education programme, on its all-in-one interactive whiteboard mobile system.

The partnership will also see Promethean installing its ActivClassroom technology in Bloodhound education centres throughout the UK and equipping Bloodhound's education ambassadors with relevant software and resources for use in schools.

"Farnborough International Airshow is the perfect event to showcase our partnership," said Jim Wynn, Chief Education Officer at Promethean. "We hope to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers through our continued involvement with Bloodhound's education program."

Over 3,500 primary and secondary schools, 200 colleges and 40 higher education institutes are already signed up to Bloodhound's education program. They are able to take advantage of open access to the science and engineering research data involved in developing Bloodhound SSC.

The project is led by Richard Noble and Andy Green, who set the current land speed record of 763mph in October 1997. Richard Noble comments: "Farnborough International Airshow is a fantastic place to exhibit the first life size model of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car. The show has been a great success and we look forward to working with Promethean to support young people on their STEM journey over the next three years."
