Teledyne Ships Over $20 Million in Systems to Japan

Company Equips Japanese Choppers With New Imaging Systems

Teledyne FLIR Defense, a division of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, has secured a major contract to supply its Star SAFIRE 380-HLD multi-spectral imaging systems to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). This agreement, valued at $20.8 million, equips JMSDF's SH-60L helicopters with new surveillance technology over the next three years.

The SH-60L is a licensed Japanese variation of the Sikorsky SH-60. It is tailored for a range of operations, including anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, and other naval tasks.

Robert Moss, Senior Director for Asia-Pacific at Teledyne FLIR Defense, commented, “Growing threats in the region have moved Japan to improve its defense and security capabilities, especially those designed to safeguard its territorial waters and outlying territories.”

The integration of Teledyne FLIR Defense’s Star SAFIRE 380-HLD systems will upgrade the helicopter's surveillance and targeting capabilities. It contains imaging systems that offer ultra-long-range airborne surveillance and high-definition visual and thermal imagery. Other features include image stabilization, a laser designator, and a rangefinder for target location and laser spot positioning.

In the agreement, Teledyne will deliver ten of its Star SAFIRE 380-HLD systems. The company has already shipped off two units for testing and evaluation, along with one spare.

“Our unmatched thermal, optical, and radar-based surveillance solutions bring the most advanced technology to the Japan Self Defense Forces, enabling them to act swiftly and decisively when needed,” continued Moss.

Teledyne FLIR Defense is a surveillance system provider with over 45 years of experience. The company’s products, which include thermal imaging sensors and unmanned platforms, are deployed in more than 70 countries globally. The tech serves a range of military, security, and public safety purposes.

The latest contract underscores Teledyne FLIR Defense’s goal to advance its global defense capabilities and reinforce its reputation as an imaging solutions provider.
