New Airstrip In Idaho At Remote Star Valley Ranch

Second Public Strip Opened By Backcountry Aviation Foundation

The Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation (JRBAF) announced the opening of its second public-use airstrip at its Star Valley Ranch property in southwest Idaho, representing an important step in fulfilling its mission to expand backcountry access to the flying public now and into the future.

Volunteers organized by the Idaho Aviation Association completed a 1,250 foot long airstrip over a period of three days. The strip is at an elevation of 4,750 feet and has both a windsock and dedicated airplane camping facilities.

The Star Ranch airstrip was preceded by the historic 45 Ranch in Owyhee Canyonlands, also in Idaho, which opened in 2024. Both strips are on land deeded to the Foundation and are open to the public for day-use. Camping and additional amenities are available for members of the JRBAF.

Onsite amenities include tiedowns, picnic tables, a steel fire ring with firewood, and an outhouse. The location is definitely remote and offers pilots a unique opportunity to experience solitude and beauty in its high desert wilderness.

Star Valley Ranch was formerly a cattle ranch and since it is only accessible by air – or nearly 100 miles of dirt road! – it is believed to be the most remote dedicated recreational-use airstrip in the lower 48 states.

Brad Damm, Executive Director of JRBAF said, “Opening Star Valley Ranch to the public is a tribute to Jim Richmond’s vision of creatingaccessible, high-quality backcountry destinations. This new airstrip provides another exceptional location for pilots to explore and enjoy the rugged landscapes that Jim cherished.”
