Challenger Explosion Photo Mistaken For Fireworks By Apparel Company Blogger

Issues Apology Following Photo's Posting On Tumblr As Part Of An Ad Campaign

The photo is iconic. It shows the moment space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds into its flight in 1986. And for those of us who watched it unfold on that January 28th, it will forever be burned in our memories.

But it showed up as a Tumblr post for clothing retailer American Apparel.

Fox News reports that the company almost immediately tweeted an apology after the image hit the Internet.

"We deeply apologize for today’s Tumblr post of the Space Shuttle Challenger. The image was re-blogged in error by one of our international social media employees who was born after the tragedy and was unaware of the event," the company posted on Twitter. "We sincerely regret the insensitivity of that selection and the post has been deleted."

The photo was intended to be one of a fireworks display.
