Oil Cap Missing From Down C-210

Accident Killed Couple, Granddaughter

The NTSB has a good indication of why Richard Dunham's Cessna T-210 went down. Now the question is, how did it happen?

In its preliminary report on the August 17th accident, the NTSB said Dunham, his wife Debra (right) and their 15-month old granddaughter had just departed Jones/Riverside Airport in Jenks (OK) when Dunham reported oil was spraying onto the windscreen. Witnesses said he tried to return to the runway, but spun in south of the field.

What caused the oil leak? According to the NTSB report, "Post accident examination of the airplane revealed that the engine's yellow oil cap was not on its filling neck."

The question of how that happened is, of course, still unanswered.
