Joby Seeks Australian Certification

Builds On Bilateral U.S.-Australian Agreement

Electric air taxi manufacturer Joby announced it has formally applied for its aircraft to be certified in Australia.

The company’s application is submitted to Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) to validate the aircraft’s U.S. FAA type certification solidifies a previous bilateral agreement between CASA and the U.S. Approval of the certification would signal the introduction of emissions-free commercial air taxi services in Australia.

JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby expressed his enthusiasm saying, “We’re incredibly excited about the potential for air taxis to offer new and more sustainable ways to travel around Australia’s global cities. With commercial powered-lift operations already considered in CASA's regulatory frameworks, we’re pleased to be working with Australian authorities using a regulatory path to market that is actively being pursued by numerous countries around the world.”

Joby’s electric air taxi can carry a pilot and four passengers at 200 mph, providing high-speed mobility with zero emissions and much less noise than a helicopter.

Joby’s full-scale prototype aircraft has completed more than 33,000 miles of all-electric flight up to this point. In November 2023, Joby performed a demo flight from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport in New York to become the first electric air taxi company to fly in a major U.S. city and demonstrating the aircraft’s low acoustic signature.
