Qantas: Competition is Good -- That's Enough

Happy to Enter New Markets; Wants a Little Protection in Its Own

Qantas said Wednesday that it welcomed the signing of an air services arrangement that provides for open capacity between Australia and Singapore.

The Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Geoff Dixon, said the new arrangement highlighted the fact that Australia had one of the most open and liberal regimes in the world, both domestically and internationally, in terms of competition, investment and market access.

"However, the complex nature of bilateral air services agreements means that Qantas is unable to compete against its major international competitors on some of their most important routes,"

Mr. Dixon said. "This is one reason why we have advocated a careful and measured approach to the timing and sequencing of further liberalisation.

"We therefore welcome today's joint statement that 'further discussions about additional liberalisation measures will be held when there is greater stability in the global aviation environment.'"
