ForeFlight Adds New Features On Black Friday

Version 6.5 Adds 'Flight Condition Monitoring', Other Updates

There's another update to ForeFlight that the company says includes two "firsts" in the mobile flight planning arena.

As you well know, the "wall-of-text" preflight weather briefings we receive from the FAA have not changed all that much over the last several decades. ForeFlight say it believes in a better way to deliver this information that is more targeted, easier to digest, and will help its subscribers stay better informed on every flight. With ForeFlight Mobile 6.5, the company is unveiling what is says are two firsts in mobile flight planning capabilities that advance preflight weather briefings in two key areas: flight conditions monitoring and NOTAMs.

In addition, 6.5 includes optimization for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, auto-show taxi is expanded to the Maps view, improvements to the Stratus platform ensure the integrity of secure communications between the Stratus 2 and ForeFlight Mobile, improvements to airport services information, and new helper messages to make filing flight plans easier.

ForeFlight says it is on a mission to make its users more aware of changing conditions that affect your flight. When a flight plan is filed via ForeFlight, the systems monitor that flight for any changes in route or weather conditions. When a significant change is detected, a notification is sent to all of of a subscribers devices (enabled by Sync) containing a summary and detailed description of the condition.

Flight Notifications synthesizes flight condition alerts from ForeFlight’s systems and from others, including Lockheed Martin’s Adverse Conditions Alerting Service (ACAS). Notifications include updates to: TFRs, airport/runway closed/unsafe NOTAMs, urgent PIREPs, SIGMETs, Convective SIGMETs, AIRMETs, Center Weather Advisories (CWAs), and Severe Weather Watches/Warnings.

The new NOTAM Advisor proactively alerts subscribers to any notices that affect the instrument procedure or airport location you are viewing. NOTAM Advisor filters notices based on airport diagram, SID, STAR, instrument approach, or departure procedure. Tap on the red banner for quick access to the notices.

A previously released feature automatically displays the taxi diagram when subscribers land at an airport and the aircraft speed drops below forty knots. An enhancement to auto-taxi (image above) in the latest version allows subscribers to view the taxi diagram automatically on the Maps view.
