Airborne 05.18.20: Snowbird Tragedy, Drone Idiot, Reserve U-2 Pilot

Also: F-22 Accident, MultiGP's IO2020 Postponed, Women in Aviation Advisory Board, European A/C Have More Time

A Sunday morning accident involving the Canadian Forces famed Snowbirds flight demonstration team has taken the life of one of their team members, and injured the pilot.

The accident occurred in the Brocklehurst neighborhood of Kamloops, BC, after rain and low visibility delayed the team’s departure from Okanagan, where they were preparing to launch a planned flyover. The accident occurred shortly after departure. After holding for weather as part of the Operation Inspiration formation flight tour across Canada, a two-ship formation departed the Kamloops airport shortly after 1100 local time. Fearing another black eye from yet another irresponsible drone operator, the latest indignity whereby a Michigan based UAV pilot flew into or very close to the flight path of a Blue Angels public flyover, is receiving intense condemnation on social media by drone pilots. The criticism is pretty much unanimous with drone operators and hobbyists greatly concerned about over-reaction by Federal regulators. Inside sources indicate that US Navy and other federal officials are not amused and recommended aggressive investigation and possible prosecution. For the first time in Air Force and 9th Reconnaissance Wing history, a reservist, Maj. Jeffrey Anderson, 99th Reconnaissance Squadron pilot, qualified to fly the U-2 Dragon Lady. The U-2 is known as the hardest aircraft to fly in the world. It has been a host to less than 1,500 pilots since the first flight in 1955, and 65 years later the first reserve pilot makes history. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
