Chinese Helicopter Reportedly Sets Altitude Record

Changhe Z-18 Helo Flew Above Tibet's Mt. Everest Last Month, Government Media Says

A Chinese Changhe Z-18 helicopter reportedly has flown to an altitude of 9,000 meters (approx. 29,500 feet), setting a new altitude record.

Want China Times relays a report from Chinese state broadcaster CCTV that said the flight was conducted in Tibet. In a clip aired on CCTV, a warning can be heard as the aircraft reached an altitude of 8,900 meters ASL, but the helicopter continued to gain altitude and eventually went above 9,000 meters, flying above Mount Everest.

The Changhe Z-18 is a variant of the Avicopter AC313, according to the report. It was developed by AVIC.

The report indicates that obtaining the record shows that China can produce large military helicopters that can work at high altitudes, and no longer needs to rely on U.S.-made Black Hawk helos for those missions.
