Lower Reimbursement for Business Use of Your Airplane

GSA Lowers Mileage Reimbursement Rate

If you are a federal employee, and you use your own airplane for government business, you won't be reimbursed as much as you were in 2002, the GSA says.

In 2002, if you were lucky enough to be flying yourself, you may recall the lusty figure of 97.5¢ per mile traveled; now, that's been reduced to 95.5¢.

The change is due to the IRS's assessment of the per-mile costs of operation. In case you hadn't noticed, flying is cheaper now...

Don't feel bad: if you were riding your motorcycle for government business, you'd be getting just 27.5¢ per mile, as opposed to the more-profligate 28¢ cents paid last year. [Let's see: the IRS thinks it's less than 3 1/2 times as expensive to fly, as to ride. That's realistic, right? Answer: it's as realistic as the rest of the IRS... --ed.]
