Toll Rises In Afghanistan Chinook Mishap

16 Dead -- Most Of Them Americans

Mission accomplished and returning to base, a US Army CH-47 Chinook went down in heavy weather over southeastern Afghanistan Wednesday. The death toll in the mishap has now climbed to 16 -- most of them American soldiers.

Two other people thought to have been aboard the heavy-lifting helo are missing.

Afghan soldiers on the scene said there was no evidence that the Chinook had fallen prey to hostile fire.

"Indications are it was bad weather and that there were no survivors," said military spokeswoman, Lt. Cindy Moore.

The aircraft went down about 1430 local about three miles from the southeastern Afghan town of Ghazni. It was one of the worst mass-casualty incidents in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion in late 2001.
