Airborne 06.17.19: Riley Flies!, An-124s Ordered Seized, Contaminated Fuel

Also: FAA Revokes, SAIB For Collins Pro Line, EAA Chapter 534 Scholarship, AAR Airlift Penalized

Some times... we forget what this aviation gig is all about... we get so wrapped up in the technology, the regs, the numbers, the physics, the business... that we often forget that flying is fun, inspirational, joyful and a motivating force in many a young life.

Meet Riley Speidel... a 14 year old young lady who has been her Dad’s flying buddy for quite a while and his student throughout... over 100 flight hours, so far. Riley has been training in a motorglider, which allows her to solo at an earlier age than a conventional powered aircraft... and this one, the Pipistrel Sinus, is a particularly good trainer with excellent visibility, solid handling and serious soaring ability, to boot. Here’s one major ‘repo’ job... A Court in Kiev has ordered the seizure of five An-124s operated by Volga-Dnepr Airlines alleging the Russian airline performed unauthorized maintenance checks on the aircraft. Roman Marchenko from the law firm that represents the Ukrainian manufacturer, said that the continuing operation of the airplanes "is a violation of the provisions of the ICAO Convention on International Civil Aviation and Airworthiness Guidelines. The seizure of property is allowed in order to ensure the safety of physical evidence and compensation for damage caused by the crime." The FAA has revised its Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) to clarify the recommendation regarding the dispositioning of jet fuel contaminated with Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The SAIB is directed towards airplane operators, fixed base operators (FBOs), FAA repair stations, FSDO’s, and foreign civil aviation authorities of certain airplanes that uplifted jet fuel contaminated with DEF, or uplifted jet fuel using refueling equipment that was exposed to DEF. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
