Fielden Aero Adds Avionics At Innovation Preview

First Products Include Flybox Avionics, Aeropup Bushplane

Don “The Colonel” Fielden, owner of Fielden Aero, who started the company after retiring from the Air Force. Their first product was the Australian bush plane kit called the Aeropup so he named it the Aeropup USA.

Fielden also manufactures a purpose-built STOL aircraft for the North American Eagle company. Both airplanes are being displayed in the Light Aircraft area.

The big news is that the company recently became the exclusive U.S. dealer for a line of Italian avionics known as Flybox after a number of requests from customers of the Aeropup kits.

Fielden mentioned that as a hobby he designed and built electronic flight instrumentation systems. As it turns out, Flybox used a computing architecture for their avionics that resembled what Fielden used in his hobby designs. This led Fielden to have a conversation with Flybox that eventually became a relationship agreement.

Flybox Avionics has been in business in Italy for more than twenty years and are very popular in Europe. The systems use cutting-edge technology for precision and reliability, and are customizable for a wide range of Light Sport and Experimental aircraft.

The instruments are installed in many types of experimental and ultralight aircraft and Fielden Aero provides sales, service, and installation of the systems, and Flybox provides excellent technical support.

Fielden said the instruments are similar to what is seen in the U.S. in terms of computing platform but in a small form factor. The feature that distinguishes them from others is the software that enables a low-cost production process.
