Northwest Scales Back Expansion Plans

Int'l Growth To Offset Drop In Domestic Capacity

Northwest Airlines has revised its expectations for growth in 2007, after enduring a pilot shortage which forced cancelled flights in June and July.

The Detroit News reports the carrier's official growth estimate for the year --- provided as guidance to investment analysts -- is now one percent, down from the carrier's optimistic two percent goal set as it exited bankruptcy in May.

But "growth" doesn't necessarily mean more planes serving US airports.

Northwest reportedly plans to trim capacity on US routes by two to three percent, while expanding more profitable international flights as much as five percent in 2007.

Northwest had already announced it needed to hire flight attendants, customer service reps, baggage handlers and other ground workers, and has been trying to recall pilots furloughed during bankruptcy.
