Wingsuit BASE Jumper Fatally Injured

Had Attempted To Jump From A 22,349-Foot High Peak In The Himalayas

A Russian wingsuit BASE jumper has been fatally injured during an attempt to leap from Ama Dablam in the Himalayan mountains. The mountain is 22,349 feet tall.

The French news service AFP reports that the jumper was 52-year-old Russian Valery Rozov, who had gained fame in 2013 by BASE jumping from Mt. Everest. According to The Washington Post, for the Everest jump he leaped from the north face at 23,688 feet after a four-day climb to his exit point. He reportedly reached speeds of 125 miles per hour before landing on a glacier at 19,521 feet.

When he was fatally injured, Rozov was attempting what BASE jumpers know as the "Seven Summits" quest, in which involves jumping from the highest peak on each continent.

The online news site Newser reports that, according to a source knowledgeable about the attempt, Rozov impacted a cliff during the attempt from Ama Dablam. His body was recovered by a helicopter, according to the source.

Rozov had been sponsored by Red Bull, which said that he leaves behind a wife and sons.
