Airborne 11.16.18: GAMA 3Q/18 Report, Virgin Orbit, Lawyers v Drones

Also: Hugh Oldham Retirement, UFO Sightings, Pilots Question 737 MAX Training, Air Combat Command

GAMA has published its 2018 third quarter aircraft shipments and billings report. The overall delivery of airplanes and rotorcraft increased in the first nine months compared to the same time period in 2017, but with some mixed performance within the types.

Total billings compared to the same period in 2017 decreased. “This is one of those few times since the great recession that we have seen all segments up in shipment numbers,” said GAMA president and CEO Pete Bunce. Virgin Orbit has completed its first high-speed taxi test with a LauncherOne rocket installed under the wing of "Cosmic Girl", the company's modified Boeing 747. Richard Branson announced the milestone. "Zoom, zoom, zoom, LauncherOne was on the move again – this time for our very first high-speed taxi test. With chief pilot Kelly Latimer at the helm, Cosmic Girl cruised down the runway at Victorville Airport this weekend with a rocket under her wing. Not only did we ramp all the way up to more than 110 knots, we also used the day as an opportunity to load real flight software onto Launcher One for the first time," Virgin Galactic Tweeted. A group of lawyers will meet in Detroit in the near future, and one of the items on their agenda could radically alter the way drones are regulated. Called the Uniform Law Commission, it is made up of attorneys appointed by state governments to craft model legislation for consideration by state legislatures across the country. They are currently working on a draft "Tort Law Relating to Drones Act" they arrogantly claim will protect privacy -- but does NOT recognize FAA's jurisdiction. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
