That Was A Bit Close, Old Boy

Two Aircraft Is Too Many On Heathrow Runway

A British Airways carrying more than 300 passengers narrowly missed colliding with a company Bae-146 Sunday at London's Heathrow Airport. None of the passengers was hurt, but the crew flying the 747-400 has a story to tell.

Seems the 747-400, inbound to Heathrow from Toulouse, France, was on short final when the cockpit crew noticed the company traffic still on the runway and moving very slowly. At the last second, the pilot of the 747, Flight BA 084 from Vancouver (BC), put the throttles to the stop and executed a go-around.

"It was one of the closest calls the crew had seen and they will be filing a report," an unnamed source at Heathrow told iNews Sunday.

A spokesman for the airline said the jumbo jet never came closer than three-quarters of a mile and 300 feet of the BAE-146. But witnesses beg to differ, saying the two aircraft came within feet of one another.

"That will form part of the investigation into the incident," said the BA spokeswoman.
