Vintage PBY Beached At Orange Beach, AL

Airplane Is Being Used In Filming Of WWII Movie

A WWII-era Catalina PBY amphibious airplane being used in the filing of a movie about the USS Indianapolis wound up aground at Orange Beach, AL Monday near the iconic Flora-Bama lounge.

The movie, "USS Indianapolis: Men Of Courage", focuses on the sinking of that ship by a Japanese torpedo near the end of the war. PBY aircraft were instrumental in picking up survivors.

Television station WALA reports that the plane began taking on water during the filming on Monday after landing and being anchored near the beach. Orange Beach Fire and Rescue was called to assist, and the plane was pulled closer to shore where it was secured by mid afternoon. later in the day, a tractor arrived to try to pull the plane up onto the beach, but crews were unable to move the aircraft.

Pumps were running the entire time the crew was trying to pull the plane onshore. Gulfcoastnewstoday.com reported that crews would try to get the airplane off the beach and back to flying later this week, but no timetable has been set for the attempt.
