Mexican Authorities Find Drug Plane Factory

Facility Converted GA Aircraft Into Drug Freighters

Mexican officials are taking apart what they say was an aviation workshop used to convert general aviation aircraft into drug-haulers.

Mexican federal authorities said they stumbled upon the hangar at a secret airstrip between Le Fuerte and Los Mochis Friday, some 350 miles south of the Arizona border, according to the Associated Press.

When the drug agents landed, they found a Cessna 206 with altered registration numbers. Those on board the suspect plane had run into nearby sugar cane fields.

Inside a hangar at the clandestine field, agents said they found a workshop and nine other aircraft -- seven of them Cessna 172s, a 206 and a 210. The registration markings on each had been altered and some had reportedly been painted to make them harder to spot from the air.
