World View, a commercial balloon spaceflight company, seems one step closer to launching manned voyages after successfully flying the first parafoil from the edge of space at a record-breaking height of 102,200 feet this very morning.

With this flight, World View announces a partnership with United Parachute Technologies (UPT) in conjunction with Performance Designs. A Gulfstream G650ER proved it has long legs recently by setting two city-pair records while flying around the world with just one stop. The G650ER took off from White Plains, New York, with three passengers and four crew members on board. It flew 6,939 nautical miles eastbound to Beijing at an average speed of Mach 0.87 for a total flight time of 13 hours and 20 minutes. The aircraft then flew eastbound 6,572 nm to Savannah, accomplishing the mission at an average speed of Mach 0.89 for a total flight time of 12 hours. California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein is not satisfied with the proposed rules put forth by the FAA for small UAVs in the US She says that small UAVs flown for recreational purposes should also be regulated. Feinstein says that the FAA proposed UAV rules, “highlight a glaring gap in FAA’s authority. Similar or identical devices may
be exempt from commonsense regulations when they are used for recreational purposes---even though the devices are most likely flown by individuals with no certification or training." All this... and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
