SaxonAir Aims for Electric Aircraft Throne in UK

First Foot Forward Comes Courtesy of Pipistrel Velis

SaxonAir’s recent “Elevating Ambitions” event was a signal flare over the domestic British market, signaling their intent to become THE brand that comes to mind when charter customers think of sustainable aviation.

The firm showed off two shiny new Pipistrel Velis Electro training aircraft, reportedly modified by NEBO Air. The aircraft was the first to gain EASA certification as a fully electrified aircraft, and despite its LSA origins and 2-seat limitation, remains a common entry point into the world of battery-powered flight today. The firm had one of their Velises (Velices?) make a lap around the patch before telling attendees that the public could sign up for a short intro flight to demo the world of electric aviation. A more involved full-day “Electrifying Experience Day” will see participants fly both the Pipistrels themselves in addition to the SaxonAir simulator back on the ground.

The aircraft will be put to use in just about the only niche they’re suited for, flight training students through SaxonAir’s upcoming e-PPL training course. The facade of environmentalism is a convenient one when pushing an internet-based curriculum, as can be inferred by SaxonAir’s acknowledgment that they intended to reach a plethora of communities that don’t have easy access to general aviation facilities - kind intentions, but a bigger market’s a bigger market no matter how it’s dressed up.
